About the centre

The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is your friendly local recreation and fitness facility based in Woolloomooloo. We are situated just minutes from Woolloomooloo wharf and Kings Cross. Our centre has a fantastic range of fitness, creative, educational and community programs for adults, children and young people.

Our fitness centre is the perfect place to improve your fitness with a fully-equipped gym and fitness classes on offer to all members. Alternatively, if you lean more towards creative arts or are just looking to meet new people, we provide an array of adult learning programs in a social environment:

  • learn to sew
  • Mac computer training
  • cooking workshops
  • painting with colour
  • graphite drawing
  • women's art
  • The Rosebud Cinema.

We also provide after-school and holiday programs for children (aged 5 to 12) and young people (aged 12 to 18). These are very popular and provide a great service to families in the local area.

These workshops are a tutored introduction on how to use Mac computers. You can bring your own MacBook or book-in to use one of the centre's. The course covers the basics of Mac operating systems, an introduction to using the internet through to emailing and Facebook.

Enjoy a relaxed and unstructured art class where you are free to explore your creativity among friendly, supportive women. This class is for beginners to advanced skill levels and ideal for any woman who is interested in meeting new friends while engaging in light art.

Our children's program (5 to 12 years) is run at the Juanita Nielsen Community Centre while our youth program (12 to 18 years) alternates between the centre and the Woolloomooloo PCYC.

Our community barbeques bring locals together in a fun, social environment. It's a great chance to catch up with old friends and neighbours as well as to meet new members of the local community while enjoying a delicious meal.

Food, drinks and entertainment are provided at the centre during winter. In the summer months, we hold the barbeques at Sydney Place (end of Dowling Street) near the basketball courts.

Youth program

The City's Youth Services team run a youth program for young people aged 12 to 24 years. The program alternates between the Juanita Nielsen Community Centre and the Woolloomooloo PCYC.

This ground level, well-lit and well-ventilated space is perfect for learning workshops or to hold a meeting. Our studio is the nerve centre of creative energy and learning.

Our lounge was designed to create a calm space within a building that buzzes with activity. The Hub lounge is the place to grab a relaxing drink and catch up with friends. Decorated with an eclectic vintage style, this calming and restful space is a perfect balance to the activity of the centre.

Sit in a plush leather seat and take your time to rebalance while soaking up the peaceful atmosphere.

Our Studio hall is available for hire. The 200 square metre space is suitable for meetings, dance, theatre and tuition. In the past it has been hired by the Benevolent Society, AMP and Kennedy Miller Mitchell – producers of "Babe", "Happy Feet" and the Mad Max trilogy.

The hall has a beautiful hardwood polished floor, mirrored walls and is beautifully filtered with natural light bestowing a feeling of the old Woolloomooloo.

Our fully-equipped fitness centre is bright and spacious. We aim to provide a pleasant and motivating environment for our patrons to achieve their fitness goals. The facilities include:

  • cable and pin-loaded machine weights
  • free-weights such as dumbbells, barbells and plate-loaded
  • cardio machines such as treadmills, cross trainers, steppers, rowers and bikes
  • freemotion and rope climber – a strength/cardio-based functional training, the most entertaining workout around
  • group fitness area
  • stretch and floor work area
  • boxing equipment
  • digital lockers
  • change rooms with showers and lockers.

Our trainers are qualified, friendly and helpful. Whatever your fitness goal, our staff can help you get results. They are always on hand to encourage, help and advise you to make sure you're getting the most out of your workouts.

We ask that you complete the pre-exercise health form when you join, which can be downloaded above, so we can make sure you're reaching your fitness goals safely.
