KGV basketball rules
How to play
Basketball is played with a round ball involving 2 teams of 5 players with back-boarded scoring hoops (baskets) at either end of the court.
The object of the game is to score points by "shooting" the ball into your team's hoop at the opposite end of the court through the top of the basket. Each score is worth 2 points, or 3 points when it is scored from the 3-point area.
Players can move around the court by bouncing the ball (known as dribbling) or passing it to a teammate by taking a maximum of 2 steps while in possession of the ball. The ball can also be thrown, tapped or rolled.
Fouls and violations
The ball must stay within the court. If it travels out of bounds, the last team to have contact with the ball forfeits possession.
Disruptive physical contact (a foul) is not permitted and there are restrictions on how the ball can be handled (violations).
A player may get up to 5 personal fouls. If they exceed the limit they are unable to play for the rest of the game.
Players who are fouled are either given the ball to pass inbounds, or they receive one or more free throws if they were fouled while shooting the ball, depending on whether the shot was successful.
The player with the ball should not move both feet without dribbling, which is known as "travelling". A violation called "double dribbling" is dribbling with both hands or catching the ball between dribbles. "Carrying the ball" is when the player's hand is under the ball while dribbling.
Once a team has control of the ball in the front half of the court the team cannot return the ball to the backcourt. The ball should not be kicked or struck with a fist. Violating these rules results in the team losing possession of the ball.
