Books in your language

The City of Sydney has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in Australia. Almost half of our residents were born overseas and about 30% speak a language other than English. The most common language spoken at home (after English) is Chinese, followed by Indonesian, Greek and Russian.

Our library network has collections in the languages listed below.

  • Chinese | 中文
  • Indonesian | Bahasa Indonesia
  • Japanese | 日本語
  • Korean | 한국어
  • Russian | Pусский
  • Thai| ไทย
  • Vietnamese | Tiếng Việt

In addition, we offer a selection of magazines in Italian and Spanish.

Learning a new language

Our community language collections also include resources for people learning new languages, including a wide range of books as well as CDs, cassettes and language kits in more than 30 different languages.

We have resources available to help people learning English too.

Please contact us for more information about our language kits.
