Live Green Library
Being green is easy
To encourage green living, the City of Sydney library network offers a range of free kits to help green your life.
Our kits will show you how to save power, repair your bike and get on your bike to save petrol.
Save power kits
These kits are available for loan and are a fun and educational way to learn more about the electricity you use and how to reduce your bills. They provide tools, information and a guidebook to help you make your home more energy efficient. The kit contains a guidebook and:
- power-mate lite to measure the power used by your appliances
- infrared thermometer to find out where your home lets in the cold in winter and the heat in summer
- stopwatch to time how long you spend using the shower and how much water you use
- compass to show which direction your home faces to take advantage of natural light.
These devices can be borrowed separately from the save power kits to help you measure the amount of electricity each of your appliances use.
They will help you find out just how much it costs you to have your TV on standby or mobile phone charger always plugged-in. Power-mates can be borrowed from the library like other items.
Bike repair kits
Each libary branch can lend cyclists a bike repair kit the same way other items are borrowed from the library – they have a 3-week loan period, can be reserved, and transferred between branches.
Each kit contains a bike repair tool and a mini bike pump, so you can repair your bike quickly without it costing you more money.
The City runs free cycling courses and the library holds numerous books on cycling techniques, routes, competitions and bike maintenance.
