NSW State Emergency Service (SES)

The NSW SES is a volunteer emergency and rescue service dedicated to building safe and resilient communities.

The major role of the SES is to lead communities in managing floods and storms and to help people in other emergencies by:

  • Assisting the community to prepare for, respond to and recover from flood and storm events
  • Assisting the community to be informed, aware and prepared
  • Evacuating people from properties when effected by flooding
  • Rescuing people who are trapped or injured
  • Coordinating the re-supply of essential items to isolated people during prolonged flooding
  • Clearing and securing damaged property and major roads from fallen trees and other storm damage

In addition to these, the SES provides many other services to the community:

  • As the major provider of Road-Crash-Rescue in regional NSW
  • Through specialised General Rescue - rescue from heights and depths, bush search and rescue, mountain search and rescue
  • By providing Community First Responder services in remote areas where there is limited Ambulance coverage
  • By assisting other emergency service agencies when requested
  • Logistics and operational management during flood and storm emergencies
  • Driver Reviver
  • Volunteer training and recognition
  • Media support and Community Education based on building safe and resilient communities
