Paul Ashton and Duncan Waterson, Sydney Takes Shape: A History
in Maps, Hema Maps Ltd, Brisbane, 2000. This is a revised and
updated version of Max Kelly’s Sydney Takes Shape: A collection
of contemporary Maps from Foundation to Federation, first published
in 1977. This edition takes up the story from 1901, where Max Kelly
left off, to the present day, closing with Sydney assuming the mantle
of Olympic City.

Shirley Fitzgerald, Sydney 1842-1992, Hale & Iremonger,
Sydney, 1992. A social and political history of Sydney City Council
that covers the works and administration of council. There are chapters
on slum clearing and resumptions, roads and traffic, as well as
sections on electricity and a broad discussion about Sydney’s
streets. Well illustrated.

names, and the location of ‘disappeared’ streets. Organised
alphabetically by street name. Out of print, but available in the
City of Sydney library and the City of Sydney Library.
Geoffrey Scott, Sydney’s Highways of History, Georgian

Street, Pitt Street, Castlereagh Street, Bridge Street, Macquarie
