Into the Queen Victoria
Market
With the construction of the Queen Victoria Market completed in
1898, Quong Tart saw the opportunity to expand his tea room business.
He leased a series of rooms on the ground and first floors for his
new enterprise. In this letter to the Mayor, 23 November 1898, Quong
Tart was negotiating the lease of an additional room for a cloak
and smoke room.
Transcript of letter:
Dear Sir,
To make my Rooms at the Queen Victoria
Markets complete and in all respects suitable for my purposes it
seems
necessary
to provide
a Cloak and Smoke Room.
Room No. 12 is the most conveniently situated
but the rent asked for it is too high.
Would you therefore be
good enough to consider what concession you can make in view
of all the circumstances so that if possible I may
add it to my present tenancy.
Yours faithfully,
Quong Tart
The Right Worshipful
The Mayor of Sydney
