Benjamin Law

Chinese New Year Festival ambassador

Journalist, author and screenwriter Benjamin Law is surprised to find himself an ambassador for the City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival 2015.

“Considering I don’t speak Mandarin, my Cantonese is abysmal and I’ve been called ‘a disgrace to my race’ on several occasions, it’s an unexpected thrill to be an ambassador for the City of Sydney’s 2015 Chinese New Year Festival!

“I work as a journalist, columnist and TV screenwriter. I’m also the author of two books. The first was The Family Law (2010), a black-comedy memoir about my family that we’re adapting into a TV series for SBS.

“My second book was Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East (2012), a journalistic look at LGBTI lives and communities in the region. I’m also a frequent contributor to Good Weekend (The Sydney Morning Herald), frankie and The Monthly.

"God knows why I was picked to be a Chinese New Year ambassador, but the festival is one of my favourite times of year. As well as attending the parade and looking at the illuminated terracotta warriors with my mum and boyfriend, I’m looking forward to eating until I explode.

“I hope you’ll join me! Gung Hei Fat Choy, Gong Xi Fa Cai and Happy Year of the Sheep!”
