Signs of the times
Signs of the times
The southern end of the City Centre, between Town Hall and Central Station, is popular with international students who've moved to Sydney to study. The presence of these young people, particularly those from Asia, has generated unique items of ephemera such as the pieces used in our gallery.
Handwritten adverts for flat sharing are on street poles, colourful posters and pamphlets promoting restaurants and entertainment venues compete for the attention of young Chinese and Koreans. Unfortunately, some signs display an open resentment towards our multicultural city dwellers.
Collecting samples of these items we're seeing now will help future Sydneysiders understand what their city was like in 2010.
