All about us

The City of Sydney's local area is made up of diverse communities – people from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, live, work and play here.

Around 177,000 people live in our 26.15 square kilometre local area. On any given week day, 600,000 people travel into central Sydney for work, study, shopping and sightseeing.

The local area's workforce is comprised of 385,000 employees of 20,000 different businesses. All together, the residences and businesses in central Sydney occupy 32 million square metres of floor space.

Our stories

The City of Sydney provides services to residents, business owners, workers, students and visitors. It has an annual budget of $430 million and employs around 1,700 staff in roles as varied as:

  • park ranger
  • garbage collector
  • public art conservator
  • electrician
  • New Year’s Eve fireworks co-ordinator.
