The City of Sydney oversees the New South Wales laws relating to pet ownership. Under the laws, cats and dogs must be microchipped and registered. We also recommend pets are desexed.
In partnership with the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter, we support the rehoming, microchipping and registration of unwanted dogs and cats.
The City microchips dogs and cats belonging to pensioners for a reduced fee. The City can also microchip pets at the home of pensioners or residents holding a health care card.
In conjunction with The Cat Protection Society of NSW, the City has subsidised desexings of cats belonging to residents who hold valid pensioner concession or health care cards, including free microchipping and transport to and from the vet.
The City also carries out discounted dog desexings for residents who hold valid concession cards.
We organise obedience training courses for dogs and their owners.
Our rangers also respond to complaints about dogs by visiting the owner to alert them of the problem, providing advice and recommending effective solutions.
