What the City is doing

Aiming for Zero Waste

The City of Sydney's Zero Waste campaign promotes waste as a valuable resource that can be used to create new products and even generate energy.

Recovering as many resources as possible helps:

  • save energy and precious natural resources such as water and minerals
  • reduce demands on our finite landfill
  • minimise impacts of global warming
  • create a sustainable Sydney for the future.

Making Sydney sustainable

As part of Sustainable Sydney 2030 we are developing an Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) system to help us surpass our current waste reduction targets. Using new and emerging technology, AWT diverts waste away from landfill, and re-uses it to create energy or recycled materials.

Sydney 2030 is a long-term plan to cement a sustainable future. Developed by the community, the plan focuses on creating a green, global and connected city.
