Garden organics service

Make mulch not landfill

Garden organics are collected in your lime green-lidded bin every second Wednesday. Instead of going to landfill your garden organics are recycled into mulch, soil conditioners and composts.

To have your garden organics collected for recycling every fortnight, order a lime green-lidded bin by calling 02 9265 9333. If you live in a unit, check with your building manager or caretaker first before ordering a bin.

The regular (fortnightly) garden organics service is for City of Sydney-issued bins only. If you do not have the room to store an organics bin or only occasionally use the service, contact us to book a one-off collection.

What to put in your organics bin

You can put the following material into your garden organics bin:

  • small branches
  • leaves and grass clippings
  • tree and shrub prunings
  • plants and flowers
  • weeds.

We won't take your bin if it contains items other than those listed above.

If you have branches that won't fit in your bin, we'll collect them if you book them in (call 02 9265 9333.) Just cut them down to 1m lengths and tie them tightly together with natural fibre string. Keep the collection to a total of 1 cubic metres (maximum).

Tree branches

We can't collect

These items can't be processed with your garden organics, so don't put them in your green-lid bin:

  • food scraps
  • compostable and biodegradable packaging and containers
  • compostable nappies
  • tree stumps and branches thicker than 10cm*
  • soil, rock or building materials
  • plant pots or garden equipment
  • non-bundled material outside your bin.

*Large and/or additional garden organics (up to 1 cubic metre) can be collected if you call for a special clean-up. Telephone 02 9265 9333 before 2pm on the Tuesday before your collection day.
