If you are planning to head out on New Year's Eve, this section will give you handy information to help you enjoy your night.

Below are some general tips but check the website closer to the event for the specific 2009 information.

Watching the fireworks

  • Check out the Vantage Points maps closer to the event to plan where you want to go.
  • NO BYO ALCOHOL and NO GLASS applies to many sites on New Year's Eve, check out the website closer to the event for all the details.

How to get there and home again

  • Public transport, walking or cycling is the best way to travel on New Year’s Eve so leave your car at home.
  • There are road closures in the CBD on New Year's Eve that will affect normal public transport routes, so it is important to know where you will arrive and depart.

If you are cycling please

  • Obey the road rules.
  • Be aware and considerate of others.
  • Don't drink and ride. It is an offence to ride under the influence.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Give hand signals when turning.
  • When cycling at night, choose routes that are well-lit by streetlights and wear reflective clothing.

Be prepared and celebrate safely

  • Use sunscreen and wear a hat during the daytime.
  • Eat well throughout the day and evening, drink plenty of water and limit your alcohol intake to ensure you make it to midnight.
  • Remember that Sydney New Year’s Eve is for everyone, so be mindful of those around you who want to enjoy the celebrations too.

What to bring and what not to bring

  • NO GLASS and NO BYO ALCOHOL is permitted in managed access sites and many other sites around Sydney Harbour for the event.
  • The Sydney New Year's Eve sychronised soundtrack will be aired by our radio partner on the night so take a radio along to listen in.
  • Always wear comfortable shoes and check the weather so you dress for the night. Be prepared for cooler weather later in the night.
