Planning your night

It’s time to think of our future

The City is doing it’s best to ensure a greener Sydney New Year’s Eve as part of the City’s continuing commitment to a sustainable future by:

  • Using GreenPower, which will save approximately 60 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year;
  • Recovering and recycling 80 per cent of rubbish collected from the event;
  • Using recycled water collected from the City's rainwater tanks, recycling plants and pits for street cleaning after the event;
  • Distributing personal ashtrays on the night to help reduce littering of cigarette butts;
  • Nominating WWF-Australia as the official Charity of 2007 Sydney New Year’s Eve. Their vision is to save life on Earth and create a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.

New Year’s Eve is a time for everyone to think about our future and take action to fight global warming.

On the night, please consider the environment by placing your rubbish in the bins provided or taking it with you and disposing of your cigarette butts in the bin.

Please also leave the car at home and catch public transport, walk or cycle.

Please give generously to WWF-Australia, the official Charity of 2007 Sydney New Year’s Eve and help save life on Earth. Visit wwf.org.au

Make your New Year’s resolution green

Make your New Year’s resolution green with the following practical resolutions for living a greener lifestyle and helping save life on Earth.

  • I will take my own water bottle and fill it up with tap water.
    Demand for bottled water is growing by 10 percent annually, adding to the 118,000 tonnes of plastic drink containers manufactured each year. Clean Up Australia suggests 65 percent of plastic bottles are recycled, the rest end up in landfill or as litter.

  • I will go public.
    Take public transport, walk, cycle or even car share. If every vehicle owner in NSW reduced their road travel by as little as one kilometre a day, 130 million litres of fuel and 377,000 tonnes of greenhouse pollution would be saved.

  • I will use water wisely.
    Check for leaks, install water efficient fixtures or tap aerators for minimal cost, plug the sink before you run the tap. Sydney Water figures show that Sydneysiders consume 15 percent more in December that the average monthly water consumption. Find out more at www.sydneywater.com.au/SavingWater

  • I will reduce the amount of rubbish I produce each day.
    Buy only what you need, avoid packaging, reuse and repair goods, use a compost bin or worm farm to get rid of food scraps and take advantage of the recycling services available to you. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au

  • I will remember to take my green bag shopping.
    Keep your green bags in the car, at home, at the office, in your bag or briefcase. If all else fails, reuse your plastic bags, or recycle plastic bags you use at your supermarket. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au

  • I will buy GreenPower.
    Switching to 100 per cent accredited GreenPower is one easy way to take action on climate change and save up to seven tonnes of greenhouse pollution every year. Contact your energy retailer and ask for 100 percent accredited GreenPower so you can be sure you are supporting the renewable energy industry. Visit www.greenpower.gov.au

  • I will invest in the environment.
    Buy a rainwater tank or worm farm, look for environmentally friendly investments and companies, offset some of the activities you can’t avoid such as flights, or go solar. Ask your local authorities, community colleges or charities about what you can do, many authorities offer water tank rebates, free composters or free efficiency consultations. Green suppliers are listed at www.greenpagesaustralia.com.au

  • I will reduce my carbon emissions and cause less climate change.
    Walk, cycle or catch public transport instead of using the car, switch to green electricity, generate less waste, use energy efficient lighting and switch lights off when not in use, limit heating and air conditioning and check for optimal temperatures, buy locally produced food which is in season and turn appliances off at the wall. Visit www.climatepositive.com

  • I will do my research.
    Find out more about climate change and what it means for you, ask questions of your local authority, energy retailer, supermarket, and water provider. Make the most of the endless practical ideas available online. Find out about climate change at www.greenhouse.nsw.gov.au
