Motel (Inn)

29 July - 30 August. Opening Night Tuesday 29 July 6:00pm

Inn is a space of 'lodging industry' and is a public place which offers service to people, who need resting. Also, the space of inn is characteristic of being transformed into private space for staying if people pay a hotel bill. Love motel, which becomes a common lodging facility in South Korea, is associated with the space of appealing to sex rather than the concept of old 'inn‘. We accept thinking way about a space based on habit and recognition which are formed socially, so that we usually recognize the inn as extramarital space where most men and women have sexual intercourse like TV media and papers rather than the concept of staying and resting. My first experience in an inn was not for sex but for staying of several days in university days of early 1990s in order to prepare for gathering of criticizing and discussing social situation. Space sense, which could not feel in home and university, made me be strange and n ervous, and that I could not fall to get to sleep in the inn because of concern about that someone could open the door of my room remains in my memory.

Without any emotional intervention, the artist tries to represent realistically the situation of motel, which increases by geometric progression in the compliance with high interest about city space of Seoul and highly thriving cities. It is the story about urbanites, who pursue to deviate from daily code and to satisfy exciting and tempting demands, and about the space of a desire, which attracts such urbanites. If audiences appreciate photographs of <<Motel (inn)>> in the perspective of their individual experience about motel, they could create the space of their own memory.

My photographs of <<Motel (inn)>> are about the clean room of waiting for new customers and the room which is left marks by already being used including objects such as the bed, lighting, curtain, interior decoration and used objects. Beds and wallpaper deviate from the standard of beds in home, and decorations and the mirror at the head of the bed, the female picture of sexy pose, the lighting and curtain of coarse and sex-appealing feeling and the ceiling decoration are stuffs whi ch usually cannot see in general houses. Such stuffs are filled with noctilucent space pictures, the sea that fishes swim and visual effect which stimulates the five senses. Now, motels which are built newly are invested by huge capitals, thus love chair of event style beyond imagination, the aquarium which is composed of three dimensions in the ceiling and floor, the movie screen, computer and automatic system are set, which attracts people to stay in motels for play.

Current motel space has gradually been filled with signs which refer to deviation from rules of daily space and standard life. The shapes of models are diverse depending on the local and place such as magnificent marble buildings of modern style, rococo style and baroque style, motels of sauna style with Korean traditional under floor-heating rooms and etc; at the night, the whole motels are brilliantly illuminated with splendid lightings and special lighting. In addition, new motels have separate entrance and exit, and are installed the cover for plate, which protects anonymity. Such service blocks people's eyes and protect individual private.

Rooms of the motel still play the role like memory of first love, longing toward people who broke up, laying down exhausting body, hideout for hiding after committing a crime and etc.
