The City of Sydney's Pine Street Creative Arts Centre plans specific events and exhibitions each year which provide opportunities for children to participate in and display their valuable and unique creative expressions to a wider community audience. The showcase children's event in the Pine Street calendar is the WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Children's Art Competition and Exhibition.
Open to entries from children aged 5 - 12 years old, this annual competition and exhibition encourages environmental awareness through the arts, with the aim of educating children and their families to integrate sustainable actions into their everyday lives. World Environment Day is not just about recognizing our environment but also about encouraging people to 'think and be green'.
2011 COMPETITION THEME
World Environment Day is presented by the United Nations Environment Program.
The theme for 2011 is Forests: Nature At Your Service. Forests provide services that are essential to maintaining our quality of life. Even in urban areas, trees and other vegetation are vital in promoting biodiversity, regulating the effects of climate change, improving water quality, and maintaining soil fertility.
Create an artwork that reflects on this theme - you could even explore the concept of the 'urban forest', depicting the biodiversity of the City. You could create an artwork
describing a local native species of plant, tree, animal, insect or bird that lives in your backyard or school yard, and how you share this space.
EXHIBITION LAUNCH
Artworks will be displayed and winners announced at the official exhibition launch on Saturday 4 June, from 1:30pm. Official announcement of winners will take place at 2:00pm. Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, first floor Gallery, 64 Pine St Chippendale. The exhibition will run from 3 – 12 June, Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm.
