Pine Street Creative Arts Centre plans specific events and exhibitions each year which provide opportunities for children to participate in and display their valuable and unique creative expressions to a wider community audience. The major children's event in the Pine Street calendar is the WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Children's Art Competition & Exhibition. Open to entries from children aged 5 - 12 years old, this nationwide, annual competition and exhibition encourages environmental awareness through the arts, with the aim of educating children and their families to integrate sustainable actions into their everyday lives. World Environment Day is not just about recognizing our environment but also about encouraging people to 'think and do green'.

2009 COMPETITION THEME
Green Transformers - Your Planet Needs You! Create an artwork that explores the idea of people as ‘Green Transformers’, saving the world through environmentally sustainable actions. This may include (but is not limited to) energy, water, waste and biodiversity.

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES
All submissions must be posted or dropped off at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre (64 Pine Street, Chippendale, NSW 2008) by 5pm, 20 May 2009. All entries must be picked up from Pine Street by 5pm, Tuesday 30 June 2009. Please send a self addressed, stamped mailer if you want the artwork to be posted back to you.

INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES
Individual Category: Open to primary school aged children. The individual competition age groups are 5 – 7, 8 – 10 and 11 – 12 years.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS ENTRIES
Primary Schools in the City of Sydney Local Government Area are invited to enter a group artwork. Create a group canvas that explores the idea of people as ‘Green Transformers’, saving the world through environmentally sustainable actions. This may include (but is not limited to) energy, water, waste and biodiversity. The work may be made in panels that can be joined together, or on one large canvas. We encourage the use of fine art materials and recycled material collages to create and explore the idea of Green Transformers.

EXHIBITION LAUNCH!!
CarriageWorks will host the exhibition launch, with announcement of the competition winners on World Environment Day Friday 5 June, 3:30 – 4:30pm. Carriageworks Foyer, 245 Wilson Street (Corner of Codrington Street), Eveleigh. This venue is wheelchair accessible. Exhibition will run until Saturday 13 June. WHAT YOU CAN WIN!
The City of Sydney’s Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, Waste Education Team and Community Gardens are offering some fantastic prizes in all categories!
• Each individual age category winner will have the choice of either a collection of fine art materials, or an art course at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre.
• The winning school will win six portable planter box systems that can be easily used in classroom lessons to help students learn about growing food. This prize includes teaching resources and lesson plans. The Waste Education Team is also happy to provide the winning City of Sydney school with a compost bin, worm farm and compost turner for the management of organic waste onsite and appropriate workshop/training to support the sytems.
• A certificate of achievement and an environmental show bag will be presented to Highly Commended entries at the official launch.

JUDGING CRITERIA
• Digital Category: We are please to announce a new category of digital media. This may include a digitally composed and manipulated image, printed on A4 photo paper or a short animation or film (running time must not exceed a 3 minutes (including credits). All appropriated images and sound should be acknowledged in the credits or as a written addendum to the work. Save digital submissions on a DVD-R capacity disc. Works should not be submitted on DVD-RW discs. The work should be thoroughly tested for appropriate playback and operation before submission. All work must be done by children.
• Submission of works that include photographic images of children must include a “Use of Image” form, completed and signed by the parent or guardian of the child/ren. Click here to download form.
• Fine Art Category: Size A3 (420 mm x 297mm), either in portrait or landscape. Recommended materials: acrylic paint, charcoal, dry or greasy pastels, watercolour or collage on canvas or thick art paper.
