Children's Program

Using the creative process, the children’s program at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre aims to focus children’s energies towards developing skills through a range of arts practices and experiences. Pine Street Creative Arts Centre understands the importance of nurturing a child in their art development and that through art a child can gain self confidence and a sense of achievement. The programs are designed for children aged 5-15 years. The Centre also plans specific events and exhibitions which provide opportunities for children to participate and display their valuable and unique expressions to a wider community audience.

STUDIO SAFETY: It is an OH&S requirement that all students attending all courses at Pine Street (including our Darlington Centre) must wear closed toed shoes at all times. Students arriving with open toed shoes (eg. things and sandals) will not be allowed entry to the studios. Students will be inducted at the start of term on studio safety.

(Please note that some courses are varied slightly from term to term.
This is intended as a general guideline. See red link above for current term programming)

Discovery of Clay

5 - 10 years

Discovery of clay

Discovery of Clay introduces children to the magical medium of ceramics. Experimenting with design and construction techniques, students will mould slabs, hand build figurines, coil pots and make joins.

All works created will be fired and decorated using colourful non toxic underglazes and slips. Interesting surface textures will be incorporated using traditional methods such as sprigs, sgrafitto, and hand built add ons.

A new and exciting program of activities is designed every term including minor pieces and a large scale major work.

Anatomical Sculpture

5 – 12 years - 4 weeks course

During this 4 week program you will construct an anatomical sculpture of a human, animal or imaginative creature. Using soft sculpting wire, you will build your creature’s armature, making it strong and stable. You will then flesh-out your creation with a variety of craft materials, including air dry clay, colourful foam, paper, card, paint, fabric and fake fur. Develop skills you can take home to create more table-top size sculptures to decorate your room.

Design Discovery

5 – 12 years - 4 weeks course

Learn about designs from the1950s, 60s, and 70s through discovering and reproducing eye-catching patterns and graphics inspired by flamboyant designers such as Bridget Riley, Florence Broadhurst and designers from the Bauhaus School. You will be introduced to stylish design aesthetics and see how designs from the past influences designs today. You will create a series of hand illustrated graphics on artist quality heavy paper or canvas. Mount these images for display in your lounge room wall.

Sat Morn Art Club

Saturday Morning Art Club

5 - 7 years and 8-12 years

This is a great chance to experiment with a variety of art mediums! With instruction from professional tutors trained in each discipline students will;

- create a painting on canvas using acrylics,

- design and build sculptures with form and function,

- construct shapes from clay and decorate with colourful underglaze

- create 2D artworks using printmaking techniques.

All artworks will be planned through drawings created at the beginning of the sessions. This helps students consider foundation structure, colour, texture and final destination.

A new program of activities is designed each term making ongoing enrolment a good option for enthusiastic young artists.

Saturday Morning Digital Arts

9 - 12 years

Sat Morn Digital Art

Designed to support older children to develop skills making art on a computer! Students will create images on the computer using drawing, scanning and digital camera techniques that can be displayed on their own web gallery.

With the software kidsBlog students will create an online diary or “blog” that includes written and visual content. Using PhotoShop students will create images in layers to make short animated sequences. Make plasticine models, a backdrop and storyboard and create frame by frame animations using IStop Motion.

With instruction from a highly qualified tutor students will gain confidence and skills to express their creative side.

Painting and Drawing

5 - 12 years

Paint and Draw

Focus your creative talents and explore different 2D media such as charcoal, ink, pencil and acrylic paint. Experience the success of working on proper stretched canvas and quality artist paper.

Exercises will include still life, portrait, landscape and abstract studies, looking at new and traditional styles. Students will gain an understanding of formal concepts such as laying out composition, colour theory, diminishing perspective, proportion and more. They will also develop practical skills such as brush control and the care of tools and materials.
