Artist Statement (Jagath Dheersekara)
Muckaty is situated on Warlmanpa country, 120 km north of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. Traditional Owners call the area "Manuwangku". Nomination of their traditional land as a domestic nuclear waste dump site in 2007, coupled with proposals for Australia to "lease" uranium and take back radioactive waste from overseas nuclear power operations, have generated justifiable fear and concern amongst the Aboriginal communities in and around Muckaty (Manuwangku). They have responded to the nomination with ongoing protests to defend their right to live in a clean and safe environment, free of hazardous waste. The photo project “Manuwangku, Under the nuclear cloud” for which I received Amnesty International Human Rights Innovation Fund Grant in 2010, is focused on this community under threat. Living with them and experiencing their socio-cultural life and activism, I attempted to document the spirit, connection to land and the collective voice of this community as they try to resist institutionalised racism manifesting in this instance in a move to convert their traditional lands to a dumping ground for nuclear waste.
From the Curator's Notes (Sandy Edwards)
Jagath spent time living with the communities documenting ‘their spirit, connection to land, and collective voice’. We are familiar with images of protest and action that have in fact taken place in the community however Jagath chooses to take a different approach. With great sensitivity and a nonintrusive camera (not an easy mode and one which can only be achieved with complete collaboration by those being photographed) he records the daily life of a broad range of community members, men, women and children. The images are disarmingly simple yet leave a strong impression ... Muckaty is a small community sitting in a low scrub desert landscape with the predominant colours created by soft red earth, long green grasses and blue cloud scudded skies. By contrast the built environment is striking for its vibrant primary colours in the walls of rooms and on people’s clothing. With a naturalistic eye Jagath records with great subtlety the relationships between family and community members. We see them in kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms as well as in the outdoor environment. Children play pool, women gather plants, make art and watch television, men are shown in relation to women and children. There is much revealed in body language. We experience a poignancy at viewing such normalcy of life knowing that it may well be destroyed for this tribal group. |

This is Guy’s first Sydney exhibition in almost a decade and his first ever made up of life drawings and portraits.
‘What I was really trying to do was capture the inner being whilst using colour and line to describe the outer.’ He says smiling, ‘These aren’t traditional portraits as such but an attempt to try and depict the sitter’s dreams and passions.’
The bright neon colours used in these recent works offer a dramatic contrast to his previous exhibition of mostly black and white paintings which had a far more superficial, fashion magazine feel.
The pieces making up this exhibition range from quite small, intimate portraits to large, oversize explosions of colour and form.
ABC Sydney said ‘this show is sure to be a hit’ and What’s on Sydney called the show ‘exciting’ and ‘not to be missed.’

Artist’s Statement
My childhood absorption in art led me to complete a BA (Visual Arts) at the Australian National University where I graduated in 1998. Since then I have pursued art, developing in a range of styles and materials and, when living in Canberra, regularly exhibiting my work in both group and solo exhibitions. This is my first solo exhibition in Sydney following my inclusion in a private exhibition in North Sydney last year.
At university and since graduation my output has included dry point etchings in some of which I responded to travels in India and Italy. A number of these were shown in a 2001 exhibition at the Megalo gallery. Other exhibitions also featured Australian and Parisian images in gouache and acrylic. In 2007 I won 2nd Prize at the City Heart art exhibition with a water colour portrait. I took part in a solo exhibition at the Theo Notaras Multicultural Building in 2009 and the Belconnen Community Centre’s Artist Proof group exhibition in the same year. In addition I was invited to submit work to a community exhibition at a Civic venue the following year.
Portraiture involving family and friends has been a constant in my art with some of my favourites being detailed pencil drawings. I also paint using acrylic medium, exploiting its potential for colour and immediacy; and more recently I have used oils. For my current exhibition, Inside Outside, I have concentrated on acrylic and water colour painting.
My works express my sense of selfhood, my cultural background and my natural surroundings. Some are highly symbolical of experiences and influences, allowing me to express personal and individual responses to life and art in a meaningful way.
Inside Outside expresses ideas, imaginings and feelings in relation to subjects ranging from people close to me, cultural influences, pets, places that include churches and beaches and, of course, nature.

As all three photographers were born overseas, namely in India, Italy and Indonesia the city of Sydney is captured through the multicultural eyes of the people that call this city home.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2011
Children's Fine Art & Digital Art
Competition & Exhibition
'Forests: Nature At Your Service.’
|
3 – 16 June, Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm,
Saturday 11 June 11am - 4pm.
Official Launch: Pine Street Gallery Saturday 4 June from 1.30pm
Announcement of Winners at 2.00pm |
|
The City of Sydney's Pine Street Creative Arts Centre plans
specific events and exhibitions each year which provide opportunities for
children to participate in and display their valuable and unique creative
expressions to a wider community audience. The showcase children's event in the
Pine Street calendar is the WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Children's Art Competition and
Exhibition.
Open to entries from children aged 5 - 12 years old, this annual
competition and exhibition encourages environmental awareness through the arts,
with the aim of educating children and their families to integrate sustainable
actions into their everyday lives. World Environment Day is not just about
recognizing our environment but also about encouraging people to 'think and be
green'.
2011 COMPETITION THEME
World Environment Day is
presented by the United Nations
Environment Program.
The theme for 2011 is Forests: Nature At Your Service. Forests provide services that are essential to maintaining our quality of life.
Even in urban areas, trees and other vegetation are vital in promoting
biodiversity, regulating the effects of climate change, improving water quality,
and maintaining soil fertility.
Create an artwork that reflects on this theme - you could even explore the
concept of the 'urban forest', depicting the biodiversity of the City. You could
create an artwork describing a local native species of plant, tree, animal,
insect or bird that lives in your backyard or school yard, and how you share
this space.
EXHIBITION LAUNCH
Artworks will be displayed and
winners announced at the official exhibition launch on Saturday 4 June, from
1:30pm. Official announcement of winners will take place at 2:00pm. Pine Street
Creative Arts Centre, first floor Gallery, 64 Pine St Chippendale. The

A selection of work by...
DOMINIC PROUST
1-14 March 2011
Official Launch Tuesday 1 March
6pm - 8.30pm
OPEN: Saturday 5 March, 11am - 4pm
NOT OPEN: Saturday 12 March
I like to keep my art focused on small events, the metamorphosis of insect larvae, the extinction of a seemingly pointless species, or the opening of a can of food. Usually I work on a miniature scale that suits these phenomenon and requires focused attention from the viewer. I favour traditional print media, primarily wood block, lino, and lithography. I also illustrate using watercolour and gouache.
I draw a lot of my inspiration from the Japanese zukushi prints. These prints particularized things as varied as animals, toys, and theatre characters. I'm also greatly inspired by the idea of a cabinet of curiosities. Cabinet of curiosities were kind of personal mini-museums. They contained objects from around the world that were yet to be identified or scientifically catalogued. Among the collected objects there could be fraudulent natural history specimens or true specimens believed to have come from mythical beasts. It is this blend of fact and fiction giving a sense of wonder, that I try to recreate in my work.
I have been exhibiting in group shows since 2007, this is my first solo exhibition.

SHROUDED
“WE ALL HAVE THINGS WE HIDE BEHIND”
Launch: Tuesday 1 February at 6:30pm
Exhibition Dates: 1 - 12 February 2011
Monday – Friday 9:30am – 5:30pm
Saturdays 11am –
4pm
Emerging Sydney photographer BRENTON PARRY is set to launch his first solo photographic exhibition.
Through his photography, the 37-year old Sydney-based graphic designer, blogger, aerial
circus student and former lifesaver has created an intensely aesthetic look through a series
of powerful images highlighting the deep insecurities people experience when they believe
they are not quite good enough.
The exhibition explores Parry’s own personal struggle with being part of Sydney’s gay
scene, although he is often perceived to be in the thick of it.
“My life has been one great journey – a chaotic collection of events. But all along this journey
I developed a love for photography, which centres on outer beauty and in particular
portraiture photography, which centres on the often more hidden inner beauty. Shrouded
has allowed me to bring both together”, says Parry.

DISPOSABLE
Nick Baldas
Exhibition dates: 3 - 12 November 2010
Meet the artist - Saturday 6 November 11am - 4pm
In today’s western world, we are moving at an ever increasing pace. We are constantly upgrading our lifestyles and supersizing what we produce, eat, think and feel… disposing of everything that we deem no longer nourishes our mind, body or spirit.
Nick’s new exhibition DISPOSABLE explores the journey of organic objects that have ‘expired’. It highlights the delicate balance between society and the physical world, by recycling unwanted materials and thoughts.
Nick new exhibition hopes to inspire the reuse of the found object and unwanted materials, creating desirable objects that question, confront and reflect the western view of materialism.

La Catrina’
Photographic Exhibition by Robert Duran
Opening night gala - Wednesday 20 October, 6:00pm
Exhibition Dates: 18 - 29 October
Opening hours: Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm
Opening by CARLOS BARRIOS, Plein Air Art Prize Finalist Parliament House 2010, Blake Prize Finalist 2005, 2007, Sulman Prize Finalist 2005. Special performance by Miss Burlesque Australia runner up Briana Bluebell!
Combining his Mexican heritage, architectural background and passion for photography, Roberto Duran is one artist you can rely on for a consistently edgy and unusual approach to photography.
His most recent collection of artworks explores the many interpretations of the Mexican Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) goddess ‘La Catrina.’ Some see her as ugly, others beautiful and others mysterious, strange and interesting.
Duran has sourced make-up artists, burlesque performers and body painters using their skills to create a collection of images that capture the essence of the festival that is celebrated to honor deceased loved ones. It may sound gloomy or morbid however it’s a very cheerful and colorful holiday.

Pine Street Mural Project
Saturday 27 March 2010 in the Basketball Courts @ Pine Street
Click here to view a film of the workshop
Thanks to funding from the City of Sydney's Local Action Plans (LAPS), the skills of the workshop facilitators and commitment from a team of volunteers, Pine Street Creative Arts Centre's old, worn out mural had a major facelift last month. 15 Pine Street students, their friends and relatives gave up an entire Saturday painting three of the four sections of the new mural - a native garden panel, a stencil art panel and a section for Pine Street/smARTarts Youth Festival logos. The fourth, Indigenous themed panel was painted on panels at workshops facilitated by Elizabeth Rooney at Glebe Youth Services. A number of kids and adults took part in the design and painting of these panels, which were then installed on site. The results are stunning! The fact that there has not been a single tag or piece of graffiti added over the last month reflect that quality, community driven murals are respected and tend not be get vandalised.
Comment from a volunteer on the day, as featured in the April CEO Update:
I had a wonderful day working as a volunteer with a group of other artists on the Pine Street Mural workshop. How incredible would it be if every suburb in Sydney had a creative arts centre like Pine Street. It is a truly inspiring and unique artistic network

Christie Torrington
New Works : 2009 1 – 13 September 2009
Pine Street Gallery
Launch: Thursday 3rd September, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Torrington’s latest exhibition explores the depth of loneliness & emptiness and its relation to inanimate objects. Combining her refined artistic sensibilities, powerful, razor-sharp fine art techniques and intensity of concept this exhibition is filled with a dark reluctance and a unique haunting grace.
“Memory is your image of perfection” – Barbara Kruger
Reminiscent of Beardsley’s inks, Torrington takes a measure of cult pop-horror and vamps it into a dark collection of special treasures.
Like looking in a long lost dead grandmas jewellery box and finding the bones of small birds, the intellectual warmth and depth of feeling of this show pushes you to question your belief in the closeness of material objects and your own personal distance to others. Our memories are defined by the collections of objects that make up our lives. These objects are so ingrained in the human psyche that they have become symbols of the domestic ideal.
Never before has a visual art opened so wide, such a fragile chasm.
Gallery Hours: Mon – Fri: 9.30am – 6.00pm. Saturday 11.00am – 4.00pm, Sunday: by appointment only, ph: 0409 229 890.

Koori Art Expressions - The Apology: first steps
Sydney Regional Students' Art Exhibition
3 - 15 November
Opening Tuesday 4 November 6.00pm to 7.30pm
Aboriginal Education is everybody’s business |
Participating schools Sydney Region Public Schools, Kindergarten to Year 12
The Apology: first steps is a visual arts project which has given all students in the Sydney Region (Kindergarten to Year 12) the opportunity to express their understanding and appreciation of reconciliation following the National Apology by Prime Minister Rudd on 13 February 2008.
This event marked a watershed in Aboriginal history in Australia and held deep significance for the Aboriginal community. The theme of this project captures the spirit of reconciliation and provides an appropriate stimulus for students from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal backgrounds to reflect on what the apology means to them.
The exhibition will be officially opened by Dr Phil Lambert, Director, Sydney Region, on Tuesday 4 November at 6pm.
It is envisaged that Koori Art Expressions will be a recurring event in the Sydney Region calendar, reinforcing our commitment to educate all students about Aboriginal Australia and to showcase the talent of our students and the dedication of our teachers.

Motel (Inn)
Eun-Jong Lee
29 July - 30 August 2008

Inn is a space of 'lodging industry' and is a public place which offers service to people, who need resting. Also, the space of inn is characteristic of being transformed into private space for staying if people pay a hotel bill. Love motel, which becomes a common lodging facility in South Korea, is associated with the space of appealing to sex rather than the concept of old 'inn‘. We accept thinking way about a space based on habit and recognition which are formed socially, so that we usually recognize the inn as extramarital space where most men and women have sexual intercourse like TV media and papers rather than the concept of staying and resting. My first experience in an inn was not for sex but for staying of several days in university days of early 1990s in order to prepare for gathering of criticizing and discussing social situation. Space sense, which could not feel in home and university, made me be strange and n ervous, and that I could not fall to get to sleep in the inn because of concern about that someone could open the door of my room remains in my memory.
Rooms of the motel still play the role like memory of first love, longing toward people who broke up, laying down exhausting body, hideout for hiding after committing a crime and etc.

The Matryoshka Principle
Friday 14 March until 19 March 2008.

The Matryoshka Principle will bring together ten local visual artists and ten sets of blank matryoshka dolls. A Matryoshka doll or a Russian nested doll (also called a stacking doll or Babushka doll) is a set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside another.
Matryoshkas are also used metaphorically, as a design paradigm, known as the 'matryoshka principle' or 'nested doll principle'. It denotes a recognisable relationship of "similar object-within-similar object" that appears in the design of many other natural and man made objects.
As a basis and as a starting point for their work, artists will take inspiration from the historical, cultural and metaphorical content of the artefacts, and then develop their Matryoshka sets into personal responses. Artists are encouraged to be creatively innovative, with the only parameters being the doll as canvas.
The artists participating are: Catherine Bourne, Nick Pensa, Rehgan de Mather, Christina Chang, Darran McCrann, Victoria Lee, Celeste Potter, Ben Morley, Matt Stanton, Maria-Luisa Marino. The exhibiting artists come from a variety of backgrounds, employ a diverse range of styles, materials and approaches to concepts in their creative work.

New Works by Sandro Nocentini
20th February until 1st March 2008.
Sandro Nocentini’s first solo exhibition in Sydney since being awarded the Sulman Prize in 2005 is going to showcase his most recent works. Prolific in painting as well as sculpture, Nocentini uses the human figure in expressions of silent storytelling. "I find body-language to be more powerful and subconsciously more effective than any words...” he says.
Accompanying his personal search for a spiritual truth, many of his stories have roots in biblical traditions, but stripped of obvious religious connotations, these are re-narrated for a contemporary audience.

Opening Launch: Tuesday 14th August 2007 at 11am

One participant said she couldn’t believe that something she had done was important enough to be seen in a public space.

“The badges look stunning and are clustered like jewels that read as a social history of our times... It is a wonderful and illuminating idea.” Yass Tribune.
“The 200 or so gathered, like me, all seemed to be struck and awed by the sense of occasion. This was an event and place that none of us was going to forget in a hurry…Most badges are about political protest – a way for the community to express the anti-establishment feelings of the maker and the wearer.” Canberra Times

An exciting group of talented photographers have banded together to exhibit their most recent works at the Pine Street Gallery in January 2007. Drawn together by the renowned Photoimaging course at Ultimo TAFE, their work presents a diverse and stimulating glance into the creativity of careers at their conception.
For many participants, this will be their first exhibition and for the viewer, a window on the vision of future leaders in the photography world. Consisting of thirteen graduates from the course, this exhibition spans a wide gamut of subject matter, reflecting on our society and environment in a fascinating manner. This is a must see for those who still believe in the power of the still image.
