A Forum Celebrating Sexuality, Sex and Gender Diversity in Multicultural Communities.

On Tuesday 14th December 2010, the City in partnership with a range of community organisations, hosted a forum to give voice to the unique needs and challenges facing GLBTIQ people who are from a multicultural background and to celebrate sexuality, sex and gender diversity within multicultural communities.
Dr Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli
Dr Pallotta-Chiarolli lectures in the School of Health and Social Development, Deakin University, and is a writer, researcher and consultant in the issues of cultural diversity, gender diversity, sexual diversity and family diversity. Hear her provide an introduction to the issues facing sexually, gender and sex diverse people from multicultural communities as well as an overview of ways to work with communities in this area.

John Tzimas
John is a member of the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council, based in Melbourne. He has also been a Convener of the Greek and Gay Support Network since 1998. Hear about his journey of what it means to be a gay parent, family and community member in his community.

Jonash Ocampo
Jonash is a 20 year old young person from Western Sydney and is from a Filipino background. For the past 4 years he has been a panel speaker for Family Planning NSW's Same Difference Program, an anti-homophobia program for high schools. Join him as he brings you his personal story of coming out and his experience of being a culturally diverse person within the GLBT community.

City Art Forum - Public Art

The City of Sydney is committed to a vibrant Public Art Program and has updated it's Public Art Policies, Strategies and Guidelines in line with Sustainable Sydney 2030.
To discuss the new public art program over 80 people attended presentations and the launch of the City's new public art website recently.
The event, held in the heritage restored Lord Mayor's Reception Room at Town Hall, was hosted by the Lord Mayor and presented key aspects of the City Art Public Art Strategy by the City of Sydney Design Director, Bridget Smyth.
Four speakers - Aaron Seeto, Zanny Begg, Hetti Perkins and Janet Laurence - were also invited to talk about their practice and respond to key aspects of the strategy.

Leon Paroissien AM, Chair of the City of Sydney Public Art Advisory Panel, is also Chair of Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design. He was Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Sydney, and Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei. Leon has been instrumental in the development of the City of Sydney's new Public Art strategy.

Aaron Seeto is the Director of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney - a non-profit contemporary art organisation with a long established reputation for supporting Asian and Australian cultural dialogue. Aaron discusses the principles he has developed for Chinatown Public Art Plan and the value of cultural overlays in contemporary place-making.

Zanny Begg, Gallery Director, Tin Sheds Gallery
Zanny Begg is a practicing artist and the Director of Tin Sheds Gallery, Sydney. She works in a cross disciplinary manner and her work revolves around an investigation of the politics of space. Zanny is interested in both the architecture of space and the social relationships which construct it.

Fresh from the success of her Art & Soul series on ABC TV Curator Hetti Perkins talks about the Eora Journey research project that she and architect Julie Cracknell have been engaged to undertake for the City of Sydney and about what it hopes to achieve. Hetti invites those present to contribute their thoughts and ideas to the project.

Artists Janet Laurence's work explores a poetics of space and materiality through the creation of works that deal with our experiential and cultural relationship with the natural world. Janet shares her thoughts on the role artists play in making major issues like sustainability and climate change accessible to the public.
