City Conversations - Headland Park, Barangaroo: In conversation with Peter Walker

At the first City Conversation for 2012, Peter Walker, internationally renowned landscape architect, will talk about the designs for Barangaroo's Headland Park.
Peter has designed hundreds of major projects during a five-decade career, including the redevelopment of Millennium Park for the Sydney Olympics and the World Trade Centre Memorial in New York City.
Following the talk, which is being held in conjunction with Barangaroo Delivery Authority, a panel of experts will discuss the new Headland Park and its significance for the city's workers, visitors and residents.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launches report on Climate Change, Employment and Local Development.

The City of Sydney's efforts to tackle climate change have been praised by the OECD.
The OECD report Climate Change, Employment and Local Development looked at how cities and regions are creating green jobs and developing a skilled workforce to meet the needs of a greener economy.
"The City of Sydney's Sustainable Sydney 2030 presents a bold and compelling vision for how this centrally located area will tackle climate change, global competition, transportation congestion, and half a dozen other major challenges over the next 20 years," the OECD report says.

Dr. Ernesto Sirolli is a noted authority in the field of sustainable economic development and the Founder of the Sirolli Institute, an international not-for-profit organisation that teaches community leaders how to establish and maintain Enterprise Facilitation projects in their community. Dr. Sirolli has devoted his life to helping people who have a 'dream' to develop a business and shares examples of how people are successfully doing this by utilising his unique methodology.
Currently there are over 30,000 businesses from Sirolli Institute programs worldwide; and they have achieved an outstanding overall business sustainability rate of 80% (as measured over five years). Accompanying him is Australian Enterprise Facilitator Felix Ryan, of STARTTS sharing local stories of community economic development.

The City of Sydney hosted a free seminar to educate retailers about how to design out shoplifting; the rights of retailers; and procedures to manage and support staff. Keynote speaker Professor Lorraine Gamman, Professor in Design at the School of Graphic and Industrial Design, and Director of the Design Out Crime Centre at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design (University of the Arts, London) shared tips and information on new anti-shoplifting designs, particularly linked to the theft of products such as cosmetics, alcohol, women's wear, designer goods and small electronic items.

Amanda Burden
Chair, New York City Planning Commission, Director, New York City Department of PlanningAmanda Burden is the Chair of New York City Planning Commission and Director, New York City Department of Planning. One of her tasks is to oversee the rezoning of one-fifth of New York City - that's 8,400 blocks - and she is renowned for walking those blocks and taking a detailed approach to their planning. Among her achievements are the elevated park on the once-derelict High Line railway, and the reclamation of the New York waterfront.
