Why we’re doing this

The City of Sydney is committed to improving the health of the Cooks River catchment and local waterways as part of the Cooks River Alliance.

Redfern, Newtown, Erskineville, Alexandria, Waterloo, Zetland, Rosebery and Beaconsfield are in the Cooks River catchment. It includes the Sydney Park wetlands, Alexandra Canal and Sheas Creek.

The survey will help guide the Cooks River catchment coastal management program. We want to understand what you value about the Cooks River and Botany Bay areas, their tributaries, and wetlands. It will help us plan for works and services along the river and in the catchments.

Tell us about:

  • the waterway places you value and what you value there
  • the things to change and improve in and around the waterways
  • the most important things for future catchment management.

What is the Cooks River catchment

The Cook River catchment extends from Chullora and Strathfield in the west to Moore Park in the east. It includes waterways, creeks, wetlands and ponds including the water that flows into Alexandra Canal and Sheas Creek to the Cooks River.

What we heard from the community

In 2019, the Cooks River Alliance completed the stage 1 scoping study for the catchment. This involved consultation with community members on a 2030 vision for the river.

The Alliance has also consolidated community consultations done by individual councils on Cooks River projects and the broader environment. Through these consultations we know that people in the area:

  • enjoy being in the Cooks River’s natural areas with wild native animals and plants
  • enjoy a variety of sports and recreation along the river including kayaking, walking and cycling
  • want the river to be clean, accessible and healthy for swimming and recreation in the future
  • want to stop pollution, rubbish, and improve water quality.

Next steps

We're doing detailed studies that will inform how we can best support people, places and the environment in the Cooks River and Botany area.
