Upgrade for Juanita Nielsen Community Centre

Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is a 19th-century heritage-listed building on the corner of Dowling and Nicholson streets in Woolloomooloo.

The multipurpose recreation centre became a much-loved meeting place for locals since it opened in 1984, and its popularity increased so much that it outgrew the original space.

The City has completed a major refurbishment to make the centre more accessible and welcoming for the whole community.

Works included:

  • installing a new elevator and accessible facilities
  • preserving the heritage-listed building’s unique character
  • moving and updating the gym and its facilities, including new change rooms and adding air conditioning
  • adding a new outdoor play area and new space for children’s programs
  • installing new rooms for community hire and classes.

The new look centre will host recreational and community programs for all age groups, and provide more spaces for community hire. Lord Mayor Clover Moore launched the refurbished centre on Saturday 19 November 2016.

The centre will reopen from Monday 12 December. The gym will be at the centre from that date and the Woolloomooloo Children's Service will move there in early 2017.

Interim arrangements

The gym is located at Mary McDonald Centre at 82 Bourke Street, Woolloomooloo. It is closed for 2 weeks from Monday 28 November to Sunday 11 December so we can relocate the gym equipment and will reopen in the renovated centre on Monday 12 December. All memberships have been placed on hold while the gym is closed.

Yoga, pilates and fitness classes will continue to run at the Rex Centre at 58–60 Macleay Street, Potts Point while the gym at Mary McDonald Centre is closed. These classes will then transfer from the Rex Centre and operate from Juanita Nielsen Community Centre from Monday 19 December 2016.

The after-school and vacation care programs are located at 33–39 Riley Street, Woolloomooloo.
