Juanita Nielsen Community Centre upgrade
Upgrade for Juanita Nielsen Community Centre
The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is a 19th-century heritage-listed building on the corner of Dowling and Nicholson streets in Woolloomooloo.
The multipurpose recreation centre became a much-loved meeting place for locals since it opened in 1984, and its popularity increased so much that it outgrew the original space.
The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre has been home to an out-of-school-hours children's service, a youth centre, a fully equipped gym and a community hall.
The City has begun a major refurbishment to make the centre more accessible and welcoming for the whole community.
- installing a new elevator and accessible facilities
- preserving the heritage-listed building’s unique character
- moving and updating the gym and its facilities, including new change rooms and adding air conditioning
- adding a new outdoor play area and new space for children’s programs
- installing new rooms for community hire and classes.
When the works are complete, we will expand our recreational and community programs for all age groups, and provide more spaces for community hire.
As part of the works, we will close off Maclean Street to pedestrians and vehicle traffic to improve the after-school and vacation care service for 5–12 year olds.
Construction started in December 2014 and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2016.

To ensure you can still access the City’s community services and facilities while the centre is closed, we have temporarily relocated the gym and after-school and vacation care programs.
The gym is located at Mary McDonald Centre at 82 Bourke Street, Woolloomooloo.
The after-school and vacation care programs are located at 33–39 Riley Street, Woolloomooloo.
