Juanita Nielsen Community Centre
Upgrade for Juanita Nielsen Community Centre
The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is a 19th-century heritage-listed building on the corner of Dowling and Nicholson Streets in Woolloomooloo.
The multipurpose recreation centre had become a much-loved meeting place for locals since it opened in 1984, and its popularity increased so much that it outgrew the original space.
The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is now home to an out-of-school-hours children's service, a youth centre, a fully equipped gym and a community hall that are all well used by locals.
The City is planning to renovate and expand the community centre to include a commercial kitchen, rooftop garden terrace and other features to meet community demand for its facilities and services.
Proposed works
It has been 20 years since the centre opened and in recent years, with the increased use of its facilities, it has become clear a facelift is necessary to meet the demands of residents and other users.
Design features will include:
- new recreation area with more community programs for people of all ages
- new gym, art room and WiFi lounge
- outdoor barbeque area and streetscape refresh
- improved sustainability.
A development application will be lodged in early 2013 and construction is due to start in early 2014.
