Crown Street
Streetscape upgrades in Surry Hills
An upgrade to the retail precinct at the southern end of Crown Street is planned to improve accessibility and create more space for outdoor dining.
City staff spoke with local businesses on changes needed to improve this intersection. In response to these comments, the City has identified places where maintenance works will immediately improve the area.
We have recently improved Baptist Street, between Cleveland Street and Boronia Lane, and Cleveland Street, between Bourke and Marriott streets.
These works included:
- New brick paving, fresh trees and plants in garden beds on Baptist Street
- New trees, garden beds, and plants to screen pedestrians from traffic on Cleveland Street
We will soon extend planting works on Cleveland Street from Marriott to Chalmers Streets in the west and from Bourke to South Dowling Streets in the east.
Consultation and future works
An information session about the City’s plans to improve the area was held on December 2011 and designs for the proposed future work were put on public exhibition.
Following a Council decision, the project will be expanded to include a greater Crown Street upgrade.
An additional $3.5 million has now been committed to the program for new paving, smart pole lighting and stone kerbs, improvements which will increase opportunities for outdoor dining and other social activities.
The resurfacing of the footpath along Crown Street has been postponed until a design of the more comprehensive works is created.
