Foley Street
Streetscape revitalised
A key part of our Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision is for a cultural and creative city and as part of this vision, the City is planning a number of improvement works along Foley Street, Darlinghurst.
The proposed works will help activate the laneway by:
- Providing a safe and more appealing pedestrian link from Oxford Square to Crown Street
- Improving the overall look of the lower ground floor tenancies of 58-76 Oxford Street
- Providing opportunities for outdoor dining.
- Attracting a range of uses that will contribute to the economic viability of the Oxford Street precinct such as cafes, galleries, home wares and clothing stores.
In June 2012 we consulted the community on the concept design including a timed road closure between Crown Street and Burton Street. Since then, we have repaved the footpath on Burton Street (between Oxford Square and Foley Street).
The majority of improvement works for Foley Street are scheduled to start in January 2013 and are expected to take about 13 weeks to complete.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 7pm Monday to Friday and between 7am and 5pm on Saturdays. Work will be done in stages to minimise disruption.
During construction a 24 hour road closure for Foley Street, from Crown Street to Burton Street, is required. Access for local business and deliveries will be maintained at all times. Pedestrian access will also be maintained.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation, and will keep you informed of the staging of the work. Our project manager and contractor’s construction liaison officer will work with business owners and local traders to minimise impacts.
Concept design
The concept design proposes the following access changes:
Creating a shared zone for pedestrians and vehicles with timed access for vehicle deliveries for businesses. The street would be closed to vehicles between 11am and midnight, Monday to Friday and closed at all times on Saturday and Sundays
15-minute parking on the southern side of Foley Street for business deliveries. This parking would apply when the road is open to vehicles and revert to No Parking during the timed closure
Creating a loading zone on the southern side of Burton Street to cater for nearby businesses. We propose to change the existing 1P Ticket parking adjoining 7-13 Burton Street (part of 227 Crown Street) to allow for a loading zone between 7am and 10am. After 10am, the 1P Ticket parking would resume
An additional loading zone on the southern side of Burton Street, at the intersection of Foley and Burton Streets. The loading zone would be provided from midnight to 11am (during the proposed closure of Foley Street). No Stopping conditions will apply when Foley Street is open to vehicles.
The proposal does not change any parking for permit holders.
