Draft George Street Concept Design
Exhibition period closed
The pedestrianisation of George Street was a key project in Sustainable Sydney 2030. As Australia’s global city, Sydney deserves a world-class main street. The City is working with the NSW Government to bring light rail to George Street, including introducing pedestrianisation between Bathurst and Hunter streets at a minimum. We are currently working on ways to increase this area without restricting important traffic flows.
The Draft George Street Concept Design sets out the principles that will guide the detailed design of George Street. It includes the City’s preferred options relating to types and configuration of street trees, paving, public art, public domain furniture, lighting and signage. The concept design will be subject to further development and coordination with Transport for NSW (TfNSW).
The Draft George Street Concept Design was endorsed by Council in December 2012. The public exhibition includes an exhibition display at Customs House from 4 April to 3 May (details below).
The Draft George Street Concept Design has been provided to TfNSW to ensure the City’s requirements are considered during the detailed planning and design process for George Street light rail. Submissions received as part of the City’s public exhibition will be taken into the City’s further design development and be passed on to TfNSW at the end of the exhibition period.
Operational issues, such as changes to the bus and traffic networks, are currently being investigated by TfNSW and details are not yet available to the City.
