Our rates calculator can help estimate your rates for a full financial year.
Rates are used to provide essential infrastructure and services.
If you own a property you'll pay rates to your local council, unless the property, such as a church, school or hospital, is exempt.
Rates are calculated from property valuations supplied by the NSW Valuer General. The calculation of rates is tied to the value of your property, and the limits placed on councils in setting rates.
We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and funds transfer from your bank account. You can also set up automatic payments on the property details page if you’re logged into your City of Sydney account – select ‘Create payment schedule’.
Pay rates onlineRates are paid every year and can be paid in full or by quarterly instalments.
If you are paying in full, your rates are due on or before 31 August 2023.

If you’re experiencing difficulties paying your rates on time, please call us to discuss alternative arrangements. You may be eligible for a financial hardship determination.
Interest calculated daily will be charged on the amount owing if you don’t pay your rates on time.
The interest rate for the 2023/24 financial year has been set at 9% per annum.
We may take legal action to recover unpaid rates and you’ll have to pay for this cost. However, every effort will be made to discuss repayment options with you.
