Unlicensed businesses

Diversity at night

To encourage diversity at night, the City of Sydney has introduced new late trading provisions (past 10pm) for unlicensed businesses under the Sydney DCP 2012.

The changes encourage a mix of late opening shops and businesses, like grocery stores, bookshops, hairdressers, retailers and galleries, in late night areas. Having more diverse forms of late night trading attracts a wide range of people of all ages and interests, creating a safer and more balanced night-time economy.

Eligible businesses will be able to apply for extended trading hours in late night trading areas as follows:

  • 24 hours in Late Night Management and City Living Areas
  • 7am - 2am in Local Centres
  • 7am - midnight all other areas
  • Trial periods by exception.

This doesn’t include food and drink businesses, convenience stores, takeaway food shops and gyms in buildings with residential accommodation.

If you would like to know more, please see the late trading for business page.

For notification periods, please refer to the Schedules section of the Sydney DCP 2012.
