Increasing tree canopy in the Danks Street east precinct, Waterloo

Increasing tree canopy in the Danks Street east precinct, Waterloo

Closed

Following community consultation, the proposal to increase tree canopy in the Danks Street east precinct was approved. Construction will commence in early May 2020.

We invite your feedback on a landscaping plan to improve the streetscape in Danks Street east, Waterloo.

The proposal will provide better tree cover for Danks, Crystal and Potter streets and Gadigal Avenue, so that residents can enjoy cooling shade similar to streets in adjoining Redfern. The proposal will also introduce garden beds to beautify the streets and improve amenity for residents and shopkeepers.

Many of the street trees in the precinct are displaying stunted growth and the current canopy cover of the area has been measured as only 10%. Our arborists recommend planting better suited species in improved soils and wider garden beds. We expect to increase the tree canopy cover to 50% once the trees reach maturity.

We propose to plant 98 new trees to replace 55 of the poorly performing trees in the existing footpaths. This will include replacing the palm trees on Potter Street with 10 additional shade trees. This part of the project may be staged to minimise disruptions to residents and there will be no changes to parking. We will replant the palm trees in one of the City’s parks.

We also propose to widen the garden beds along existing sections of asphalt.

The tree species proposed for this precinct include brush box, spotted gums, lilly pilly and Chinese elm.
