About the centre

Joynton Avenue Creative Centre hosts creative studios for artists and spaces for presenting exhibitions and other cultural events.

The building was once the Esme Cahill nurses quarters of the Royal South Sydney Hospital. Peter Stutchbury Architecture with Design 5 – Architects transformed it into a space for creativity and connection, using the site’s history to inspire many design elements. A pattern of blood cells adorns perforated copper panels shading the western façade, and the brass typography and signage can be traced to medical lab equipment.

The centre has won numerous architectural awards since opening in 2018.

Artists in residence

Following a competitive application process, our latest group of artists moved into the centre in early 2026. They use the space to make art and host public exhibitions and events.

Season

Season is an artist-run initiative that presents public programs in dialogue with exhibitions. Season hosts workshops, forums, lectures, listening parties, gatherings and classes, and provides affordable studio access to artists and community members.

Artist Studio Collective

Artist Studio Collective is a group of 2 Sydney-based artists: Keg de Souza and HOSSEI. They use the space to develop their art practices, to host gatherings and residencies, and to foster collaboration within their communities.

The Bench Jewellery School and Workshop

The Bench is a jewellery studio providing accessible, welcoming and hands-on classes for newcomers and experienced jewellers alike. They also offer professional development and studio hire.

wirnan

First Nations-led wirnan hosts shared workspace, residencies, public events, workshops and community-led programs for cultural exchange and social impact. It is a collaboration between Garuwa, Indigitek and associated creatives including Sancia Ridgeway.

Tenancy 5

Tenancy 5 is a photographic collective of 3 artists: Ash Garwood, Jack Ball and Talia Smith. The collective provides studio space and a shared photo lab for its members. It also hosts public programs including studio critiques, LGBTIQA+ photography classes and hot desk studio access.
