Seeking expressions of interest for Yananurala: Sitelines and Conversations

Yananurala | Walking on Country presents an unprecedented and innovative way to inspire people to experience the harbour foreshore.

The realisation of Aboriginal stories through public art and interpretation, undertaken with the proper care and respect required, will make visible and celebrate the connection to Country that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have and the way that they know and experience Country.

Initially conceived as 2 separate projects, Sitelines and Conversations have been reimagined as one project. The project’s main objectives are to:

• create a storytelling thread that connects different places and Aboriginal stories and histories along the harbour foreshore
• provide continuity through form and materials and lay the foundation to create a true sense of Country for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
• support Aboriginal communities, businesses and cultural practitioners at the same time as fostering better cultural awareness and driving local and international tourism.

The selected artist or design team will work in collaboration with Emily McDaniel (Yananurala curator), our employees, specialists and community advisors to develop their selected concept design for Sitelines and Conversations sites.

We’ll refine the concept design following community and stakeholder consultation, including with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Panel, the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council and state government partners including cultural organisations along the harbour.

Following the detailed concept design stage, the selected team will work with the curator and our employees to identify and procure the suppliers for the fabrication and installation stage.

$10,000 excluding GST will be paid to up to 4 shortlisted artists and design teams from this stage 1 expression of interest to develop illustrated concept proposals in stage 2.

Shortlisted artists and design teams must provide final fee proposal to deliver the project.

Following stage 2 the selected artist or design team will enter a simplified consultancy contract with us to complete the project.

Yananurala | Walking on Country is a 9km walk that extends from the Australian National Maritime Museum in Pirrama (Pyrmont) to Bayinguwa (Garden Island) adjacent to Wallamool (Woolloomooloo).

Sitelines project locations are linked across the harbour in 4 locations along the walk. Conversations project sites are proposed at 12 locations on the walk. Find out more  about the Yananurala project locations. 

Completed stage 1 expression of interest applications must be lodged online at Tenderlink by 11am Monday 22 November.

Applicants will be required to register with Tenderlink to download the expression of interest document E-2022-772 and returnable forms – attachment D.

Applicants will be required to provide:

1. contact details - by completing the submission form checklist - form a
2. a fee proposal by completing the fee proposal form - form b
3. experience - submit an outline of your experience - form c summarise the creativity and innovation of your artistic or design practice. You can provide a maximum of 4 project examples. Each example should be no more than two A4 pages including images, a short description and contact details of references.
4. project methodology - - form d provide an initial project methodology for developing your detailed concept designs into the various elements or works envisaged by this expression of interest (maximum 2 A4 pages).
5. environmental initiatives - describe sustainability measures (maximum 1 A4 page)
6. Work Health and Safety - commit to work health & safety responsibilities by signing form f
7. your agreement the City of Sydney’s design consultancy agreement, the schedule of services and work program indicated in this brief and providing the relevant insurances.

Applications will be evaluated against these criteria:

1. Bidder is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
2. Examples of previous experience that demonstrates the creativity and innovation in artistic or design practice.
3. Evidence of an awareness of the complexity of the project, showing an understanding of material and technical aspects involved and consideration of the cultural and environmental aspects of the project. 4. Environmental Statement describing sustainability measures to be implemented.
4. Commitment to Work, Health and Safety responsibilities
5. Commitment to hold insurances to a level commensurate with the risks involved in delivering the proposed work
6. Commitment to achieve the project scope of works within the program
