Expression of interest

We’re seeking an artist, designer, creative or creative agency to collaborate with the Sydney Lunar Festival project team and the City of Sydney to produce the hero artwork for the 2021 festival.

The successful applicant will be required to develop an original artwork/design. This may be photographic, illustrative or graphic (or any combination) and should:

  • represent the Year of the Ox in a culturally appropriate way that is accessible to people of all backgrounds
  • include the words ‘Sydney Lunar Festival’ and ‘Year of the Ox 2021’
  • portray the celebratory nature of Lunar New Year
  • represent the unique nature of Sydney's celebrations and the contemporary nature of the festival
  • allow flexibility for the inclusion of other festival and partner logos (up to 6), and additional brand elements such as dates, hashtag, website and event copy
  • inform the art direction of the 2021 festival collateral.

The City has allocated a budget of up to approximately $12,000 (excluding GST where applicable) for all services in the brief.

About the festival

The Sydney Lunar Festival is a celebration of the Lunar New Year. In 2021, the festival will celebrate the Year of the Ox.

The City will produce several events including the illuminated artwork exhibition, the Lunar Lanes street party, Dragon Boat Races and more than 95 associated events to celebrate Lunar New Year.

The creative direction of the festival is determined by the Sydney Lunar Festival project team.

In 2021, the Sydney Lunar Festival will be held from Saturday 6 February to Sunday 21 February.
