Susie Burrell takes motherhood in her stride

Dietitian Susie Burrell watches over the eating habits of Sydney's top actors, musicians and sportspeople. But, she says, what you eat is just one part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

"Staying fit and well is important for everyone whether you're an elite sportsperson, a new mum or over-60."

Since welcoming her twins Gus and Harry in January this year, Susie has kept active with regular power walks around Sydney.

"Walking is the most basic form of exercise, and in my opinion, one of the best ways for people to maintain a healthy weight," Susie says.

"Many people don't have time for a gym membership or to play organised sport. But walking is something that everyone can do, no matter how busy they are."

Living in Alexandria, one of Susie's favourite places to walk is Sydney Park.

"I absolutely love Sydney Park. It's the perfect place to visit, whether you're after a challenging powerwalk or a leisurely stroll.

"If I need to get the blood pumping, I tackle Sydney Park's famous hills. Believe me, pushing my twins uphill in their stroller is tougher than most bootcamps! Best of all, it's completely free."

Susie says walking is also a great way to keep your eating habits in check.

"Most of us feel hungry when we're bored. That often causes us to reach for a chocolate bar or other convenient snack food. More often than not, it's not our stomach looking for food, but our mind wanting something to do.

"Whenever you get that feeling, go for a short walk around the block. Chances are, that chocolate craving will disappear."

Susie Burrell is a City of Sydney Walking Ambassador.
