Sami Lukis walks the walk

Loves exploring the city on foot

Sami has been a well-known face and voice in Australian radio and television for 20 years, presenting news, sport, weather, entertainment, reality, and children's TV. She balances her hectic media schedule by walking every day.

"I walk mostly for exercise – for both me and my dog Lolli. I have a bad back so I can't run and I don't really enjoy the gym. So walking and yoga are my 2 main forms of exercise. Most days I walk at least an hour a day, sometimes twice a day."

"I love the walk down through Ruschcutters Bay to the end of New Beach Road and Yarranabbe Park. Lolli can walk off lead, there are plenty of other dogs for her to play with and the views are priceless," Sami says.

Based in the inner city, walking is Sami's preferred mode of transport: "I'm really conscious of getting outside to breathe in some fresh air, enjoy the outdoors and just be surrounded by greenery. But I also just walk everywhere – to the post office, the bank, the hairdresser, the coffee shop, the pub. Everything I need in my world is super close."

Sami started her own travel company 6 years ago, organising and hosting tours of New York for Australian women. The trips include daily guided walking tours.

Spending time away has made Sami appreciate walking in Sydney even more.

"The walk down to Mrs Macquarie's Chair and around Farm Cove to the Opera House is one of the most scenic anywhere in the world. When it comes to 'wow factor' that walk rates alongside the walk across Brooklyn Bridge in New York, with its spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline."

Sami wants to see more people making the most of Sydney's walking opportunities.

"We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, so my advice is get out there and enjoy it! Whenever I travel, one of my favourite things to do is get up early, throw on my walking gear and hit the streets. I've done some beautiful sunrise walks but Sydney will always be my favourite walking city," Sami says.

Sami Lukis is a City of Sydney Walking Ambassador.
