Saunders and Miller streets cycleway improvement works

The new cycleways will provide protected space for people to ride safely.

What we’re doing

This new 2-way separated cycleway on the northern sides of Saunders and Miller streets is a major link in the NSW Government's strategic bike network.

The route between the Anzac Bridge and the city centre is a major commuting link for bike riders. There are already almost 1,500 weekday bike trips between Anzac Bridge and the Union Street cycleway during peak hours.

Other improvements include:

  • 3 new paved intersections at Saunders Street and Quarry Master Drive, Miller and Jones streets, and Miller and Mount streets
  • a new pedestrian crossing near Miller Lane to help people safely cross Miller Street
  • consolidating 2 bus stops on the north side of Miller Street.

Impacts and disruptions

There will be some parking changes associated with the new cycleways, with 4 fewer spaces on Saunders Street and 11 fewer spaces on Miller Street.

This project is funded by the NSW Government.

Responding to the community

We exhibited the plans and consulted the community in September 2019 and February 2020. Council endorsed the proposal on 9 March 2020. The Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee has endorsed the scheme.

Why is this project needed?

The route between Anzac Bridge and the Union Street cycleway is one of the busiest bike riding connections in the city. There are more than 1,500 bike trips every weekday along this route.

This new cycleway link will keep current and new riders safe, by providing a separated cycleway so riders will be protected from traffic.

Will traffic on Saunders Street still be 2-way?

Yes. Community feedback on the initial design saw concerns raised about the proposed 1-way westbound traffic arrangement on Saunders Street. These concerns have been addressed by the new design which maintains 2-way traffic on Saunders Street in a yield street arrangement and provides a separated cycleway.

A single vehicle lane will be provided in Saunders Street with numerous spaces provided for vehicles travelling in opposite directions to pass one another. This type of arrangement is common in other parts of the City of Sydney area such as Glebe, Newtown and Erskineville. The new layout of Saunders Street will be monitored following completion of the works to ensure road safety is maintained.

How will the shared environment intersections operate?

There are 3 shared intersections along the new cycleways. They’re marked with a different surface treatment, plus a ramp for vehicles entering and leaving the intersection.

At a shared environment intersection, people walking have right of way over vehicles. And vehicles – bikes included – must give way to other vehicles already in the intersection, just like in a roundabout.

Will there be any changes to parking?

Yes, 15 parking spaces will be affected. 4 parking spaces will be removed on Saunders Street and 11 parking spaces will be removed on Miller Street.
