Federation – one people, one destiny, one flag

The colonies become a nation

The City of Sydney's Archives' collection of Federation ephemera showcases the turning point Australia's history when 6 separate British colonies, each with their own government, were united as one.

It was an historic occasion that took years in the making. The examples of Federation ephemera in the gallery below show the artistic aesthetic of the time and the sense of united celebration.

The ephemera relates to celebrations connected with the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia at Centennial Park on 1 January 1901 and the opening of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in Melbourne on 9 May 1901.
