About this opportunity

We produce the annual Sydney New Year’s Eve event, one of the largest fireworks displays in the world. It attracts a live audience of more than a million people around the harbour foreshore and is broadcast to millions of viewers around the world.

The Calling Country segment respectfully acknowledges the custodians of the land where Sydney New Year’s Eve is held. It showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and culture on a global stage, embracing and honouring the Dreaming of this place and our relationship to it.

Our requirements

The creative services provider must engage Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists to produce the Calling Country segment and collaborate with our creative team on ceremony, projections, pyrotechnics, music and live performance.

The Calling Country segment includes:

  • 8:57pm–9pm – Calling Country live performance on TV broadcast partner’s stage, including Sydney Harbour Bridge lighting and projections
  • 9pm–9:08pm – Calling Country fireworks, including soundtrack, Sydney Harbour Bridge lighting and projections.

This will be a 2-stage expression of interest process. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to tender for services in the second stage, which will be at the City of Sydney’s discretion.

The service provider is responsible for the following features:

  • Pylon projections – the service provider must supply an overarching creative concept including sample imagery and/or curated original artworks. Our projection content supplier will turn the concept and imagery or artwork into projection animations in collaboration with the service provider.
  • Live performance – the service provider is responsible for the activity onstage including any performers, musicians, instruments and props, as well as costumes, hair and makeup. Our TV broadcast partner will supply the stage, stage management and production elements.
  • Fireworks soundtrack – the service provider must produce an original commissioned soundtrack for the fireworks display including composition, arrangement, recording and performance.
  • Artist management – the service provider is responsible for engaging, contracting and paying any performers or artists engaged in connection with the Calling Country segment.
Fireworks light up the night sky over Sydney Harbour Bridge, with city buildings illuminated and a large First Nations projection on one bridge pier.
