What we’re doing
We’re upgrading and renewing Belmore Park.
Belmore Park is on Gadigal country. It’s an important historical park and a connection point next major public transport hubs. It hosts regular demonstrations and cultural gatherings, including Lunar New Year celebrations. It is an important place for the local Haymarket community.
The park is a significant place with enduring connection for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, activism and cultural practice. Its location next to Central station makes it an important place for members of the Stolen Generations.
Key features of the design include:
- simpler paths with new surfaces
- better lighting for people to feel safer at night
- remodelling the existing bandstand as a new play element for all ages
- a place for the community to meet and spend time together
- more greenery, planter beds and seating
- keeping all mature and healthy trees
- improving access to the park on the western side, with more paths.
Why we’re doing this
Improving Belmore Park is a priority in our Haymarket and Chinatown revitalisation strategy and Haymarket and Chinatown public domain plan.
We asked our communities about the proposed concept design in March 2026, which showed strong support for the proposed works. Council endorsed this proposal on 18 May 2026.
This project helps achieve our Sustainable Sydney 2030-2050 target by increasing green cover and tree canopy cover.
