Your say on flood risk management in the Alexandra Canal and Centennial Park catchment
Under review
Contributions to this consultation are closed for evaluation and review. The project team will report back on key outcomes.
Why we’re doing this
Flood risk management plans are required to be reviewed under NSW Government policy. This improves our understanding of changes in flood behaviour to minimise flood risk impacts on our communities.
The Alexandra Canal and Centennial Park catchment is now due to go through this process.
Learning about your experiences of flooding helps us understand local conditions and ensures that the modelling is accurate.
Flooding occurs when there is more rain than drainage pits and pipes can contain, causing water to spread over the land. Generally, once surface water is more than 15cm deep it may be flooding. Puddles or ponds after rain are normal and not considered flooding.
What we’re doing
We’re updating our flood risk management plan for the Alexandra Canal and Centennial Park catchment.
The study area includes Alexandria, Beaconsfield, Rosebury, Erskineville, Eveleigh, Waterloo, Zetland, Moore Park, Centennial Park, Paddington, Redfern, Surry Hills, St Peters, Newtown and parts of Darlinghurst. These areas are highlighted on the map below.
The process of updating the flood risk management plan involves updating the flood modelling and flood mapping and then reviewing existing management measures. We’ll also consider new measures to reduce flood risk.
We’re interested in hearing from you if you live in the Alexandra Canal and Centennial Park area and you’ve:
- experienced flooding on your property
- seen flooding or signs of flooding
- got photos or documents related to flooding.
You can also give feedback on flood mitigation and climate change as it relates to flooding through our survey.
The information you provide will help us understand any existing local flooding problems. This will help us plan and resolve, or reduce, the impact of flooding in these areas.
If you live in another suburb, it falls under a different flood catchment area, which will be updated at a later time.

How you can give feedback
Consultation closes at 5pm on Tuesday 11 November 2025.

Next steps
We’ll report all feedback to the Floodplain Risk Management Advisory Panel. We’ll then invite community feedback on the draft Alexandra Canal and Centennial Park catchment study and plan.
When a property is identified as flood prone, we’ll directly notify the property owner.
