We invite you to give feedback on a review of environmental factors for the cycleways on Moore Park Road, Centennial Park and Fitzroy Street, Surry Hills. The review considers the current state of the street, impacts of the cycleway and its benefits.
We propose to make the Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street cycleways permanent.
Why we’re doing this
Oxford Street, Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street each play a different role in Sydney’s bike network:
- Oxford Street provides a direct and relatively gentle route between Bondi Junction, the eastern suburbs and the city centre.
- Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street provide a direct link between Bondi Junction, the eastern suburbs, Surry Hills, Central station and Sydney's inner west.
- Fitzroy Street also connects Anzac Parade and the south-east with Surry Hills, Central station and the inner west.
Together, these routes support different travel needs and help people access key destinations across Sydney.
In 2023, Council approved the Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street cycleways to remain in place for up to 3 years or until the NSW Government's completes and opens the permanent Oxford Street cycleway between Taylor Square and Centennial Park, whichever came first.
Since then, more people have been using these cycleways. Bike trips have increased by 89% on Moore Park Road and 74% on Fitzroy Street. The number of shared bike trips has also grown significantly.
Safety has improved since the cycleways were installed. In the 5 years before they were built, there was one fatality and 4 serious injuries on these routes. In the 5 years since they opened, there have been no reported fatalities or serious injuries.
The cycleways now carry up to 1,000 bike trips each day. If they were removed, many people riding bikes would need to return to busy traffic, increasing safety risks. Some riders may choose to use footpaths or shared paths instead, which could affect the safety and comfort for people walking., these routes support different travel needs and help people access key destinations across Sydney. Council is proposing to make the Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street cycleways permanent.
