Why we’re doing this

Paddington Town Hall is one of Sydney’s most important civic buildings. Completed in 1891, it’s the second-largest town hall in the area and a prominent example of Victorian Free Classical architecture. Designed by architect John Edward Kemp, it features rare interior elements by Walter Burley Griffin and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.

Over time, the building has adapted to meet changing community needs. Today, it includes an events hall, library, cinema and creative spaces but hasn’t had a major upgrade in more than 50 years.

What we’re doing

We’re developing a concept plan for the building’s renewal to ensure it continues to support local culture, events and community life for the next 50 years. Our goal is to make the landmark more welcoming, accessible and functional.

The proposed renewal will:

  • modernise building services and facilities
  • improve access and versatility of internal spaces
  • repair and protect important heritage elements
  • enhance the building’s role as a hub for cultural and community use.

We invite your feedback to inform our planning.

Tell us about your connection to Paddington Town Hall – how you use it, what you value and the memories you treasure.

Paddington Library

Paddington Library is a valued community service located in Paddington Town Hall. The renewal won’t affect the library’s long-term presence in the building. We’re working with Woollahra Council to plan for any short-term disruption during the renewal. We’ll share more details as plans are developed.

Next steps

Your feedback will help inform our planning. The community will have the opportunity to provide feedback on concept plans in 2026.

Everyone who provides feedback will receive project updates as planning progresses and more details become available.
