Summer streets program: use of footpath and open space for outdoor dining, extended foyer space and live performance

Village high streets will be transformed into spaces for walking, shopping and dining for one day only in January to March 2022.

Project Status: In progress

Why we’re doing this

High street retailers and hospitality businesses have been hit hard by the ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The City of Sydney wants to help these businesses by encouraging more visitors to shop, dine and enjoy our local precincts.

We will host one-day events across selected locations and help businesses activate their spaces, trade on the street and be part of the broader summer streets campaign.

This Covid-19 recovery program is a chance for residents and businesses to come together to connect, celebrate and use the streets as a shared community space.

What we’re doing

We called for expressions of interest from businesses along each high street to use public space for outdoor dining, foyer space and live performance. These measures will help enliven our local neighbourhoods and encourage visitors onto the streets to support local businesses.

We consulted with Transport for NSW and NSW Police Force, and gained approval from the Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee for the temporary closures.

The temporary use of footpaths and public open spaces for outdoor dining, outdoor foyers and performance space is in line with the Liquor Act 2007. The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority, Minister for Customer Service, Transport for NSW and NSW Police Commissioner have been notified.

  • Redfern Street was on public notification between 30 December 2021 and 7 January 2022.
