Regimental Square upgrade works

What we’re doing

Regimental Square, one of the city centre's important memorial spaces, has been upgraded with new seating, street lights and more space for commemorative services and pedestrians.

The square, near Wynyard, has been a meeting place for the Royal Australian Regiment Association on Anzac Day for nearly half a century.

The revitalisation of Regimental Square was designed to complement the heritage features of the 515 square metre site.

The new design makes it easier for people to walk through the area from Wynyard station and provided more passing trade for local businesses during light rail construction along George Street.

The work included removing the original planters and replacing the plants.  

The water feature and memorial wall, with plaques commemorating conflicts the Royal Australian Regiment served in, has been refurbished and retained.

The memorial was opened in December 1976 by Lord Mayor Leo Port and NSW Governor Sir Roden Cutler. The name Regiment Square was proposed by the Royal Australian Regiment Association and accepted by Council in September 1977.

The upgrade was completed in March 2017.
