Sustainable Sydney 2030 is a vision for the sustainable development of the City to 2030 and beyond. Sustainable development is not just about the physical environment, but about the economy, society and cultures as well, and how addressing each, with bold ideas and good governance, will result in better outcomes for current and future communities.
Sustainable Sydney 2030 has a vision of a Green, Global, Connected City.
GREEN with a minimal environmental impact, green with trees, parks, gardens and linked open spaces, green by example and green by reputation.
GLOBAL in economic orientation, global in links and knowledge exchange, global and open-minded in outlook and attitude.
CONNECTED physically by walking, cycling and high quality public transport, connected ‘virtually’ by world–class telecommunications, connected to communities through a sense of belonging and social well being.

The City will be internationally recognised as an environmental leader with outstanding environmental performance and new ‘green’ industries leading economic growth.
The City will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions with a network of green infrastructure projects to reduce energy, water and waste water demand across the City. Major renewal sites will take the lead.
The City will contribute towards containing Sydney’s urban footprint by planning for more housing in the City that is integrated with public transport, community facilities and services and open space.
The City will remain Australia’s global city and international gateway - a world class tourism destination through sustained investment in cultural infrastructure, destinations and events.
The City will plan for premium spaces for business activities to maintain high quality jobs in the City Centre along with the social, cultural and recreational facilities required to attract and retain a talented and global workforce.
The City will embrace innovation, and new generation technologies to connect the City, stimulating creativity and collaborations.
The City will be easy to get around with a local liveable network for walking and cycling and transit routes connecting the City’s villages and the City Centre. The City will be easy to get to with an upgraded regional transit network, enhancing access to Sydney’s heart from across the region.
The City’s distinctive villages will continue to be strong focal points for community life and a sense of belonging. The villages will be served by Activity Hubs where services will be concentrated and interconnected. The villages and Activity Hubs will improve liveability which will help our City maintain its edge over other global cities.
The City will be increasingly diverse and inclusive. An increased share of affordable housing and better access to community facilities and services across the City will improve relative equality and wellbeing. Cultural vitality will be fostered through increased participation in artistic expression, performance, events and festivals.
The City will take the lead in partnerships and cooperation between governments, the private sector and the community to ensure change. The City will connect with the wider national and global community and will pursue relationships with other Australian and international cities for cultural, trade and mutually beneficial exchanges.
