Sydney Food Trucks

Up for a late night?

Food trucks in Sydney

Food trucks

A fleet of food trucks will soon hit the streets to deliver on something Sydneysiders told the City they want - more quality food at all hours.

The ten operators chosen to take part in the City's food truck trial are busily fitting out their custom-designed kitchens on wheels, including one that looks like a farm barn and another that will double as a moving canvas for street art.

Meanwhile, the City is consulting with the community on development applications for 13 sites for the 10 permitted food trucks to park off-street for short periods of vending.
The first 10 food trucks permits will be issued when all the health compliance checks are completed.

The 10 operators are:

  • Agape
  • Al Carbon
  • Bite Sized Delights
  • Urban Pasta
  • Cantina Mobil
  • Eat Art Truck
  • Let’s Do Yum Cha
  • Taco Truck
  • Tsuru
  • Veggie Patch

The operators will serve up exciting new food options that include:

  • Steamed gow gee, roasted duck buns and fried spring rolls
  • Gourmet tacos, nachos and Mexican-themed treats washed down with sparkling, non-alcoholic sangria
  • Gourmet pizzas with wagyu beef meatball, percorino and basil or scallops with Spencer Gulf prawns on a base of the ancient grain spelt, all totally organic
  • Grilled spatchcock, kingfish ceviche
  • Pastizzi, filled with flavours including spinach and ricotta, salmon and dill, cherry and apple and chocolate mousse
  • Braised pork served with a Chinese half-moon bun or Japanese onigiri rice ball and an origami crane
  • Tofu burgers, fresh juices and custom-made ginger beer
  • Soft tacos with beef, pork, lamb and chicken cooked over mesquite- and
  • mango-scented charcoal with homemade salsas

A smartphone app being developed by the City will soon provide a real-time map, links to food truck menus and other details that help to locate the latest tasty treats.

Background

The City is developing a Night Time City Policy, informed by extensive research and community feedback. Common themes from the consultation process included concerns about safety, a lack of night time diversity and suggestions for late night dining options such as the food trucks found in New York City, Los Angeles, Bangkok and London.

A vibrant food truck culture is emerging internationally. The excitement of food trucks in other countries is a combination of great tasting food with unusual flavour mixes, affordable price ranges, a dedication to customer service that generates loyal followers and brightly decorated vehicles that are visually an interesting part of the streetscape.

Vendors differentiate their business with unusual names, strong branding designs, themes (e.g. vegan, cross-cultural recipes) and menus that capture the diversity and richness of their city’s food culture. Many of these international food trucks develop cult followings, guiding their fans to truck locations via social media updates.

Food trucks also enable emerging young chefs and cooks to present innovative new food trends to potential customers in city locations that could not be captured through the traditional model of a café or restaurant. The quality of offerings from food trucks are celebrated through large scale award events –such as the Vendy Awards across the US.
