The problem with e-waste
Australians generate over 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste for short) each year and most of it ends up in landfill. As well as putting more pressure on limited landfill capacity, e-waste can be hazardous as it contains toxic materials.
To keep e-waste – most of which is recyclable – out of landfill, the City of
Sydney offers free quarterly drop-off days for City residents. Since November 2008, we’ve recycled more than 104 tonnes of e-waste, dropped
off by more than 3,000 residents.
What happens to it?
The e-waste we collect is recycled by PGM Refiners in Dandenong, Victoria. Glass is recycled into new products like windows or new TV screens. Plastics are recycled into new products like garden furniture or new electronic plastic casings. Cables, metals and circuit boards are recycled once hazardous materials are removed.
Items we'll accept
Almost 99% of all the e-waste collected on drop-off days is recycled. Below is a list of the items you can drop off.
- Televisions
- Computers - desktops, monitors and laptops and printers
- Home and home office equipment – photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, servers, projectors, DVD players, video recorders
- Computer peripherals such as joysticks
- Electronic games, CDs and DVDs and tapes, cameras
- Electronic components
- Phones – mobiles and landlines
Items we can't accept
White goods should be recycled through the City's free, pre-booked service.

Did you know?
The City of Sydney supports a national scheme for managing electronic waste,
where producers are responsible for recycling products at the end of their
useful life. The good news is that a National Scheme for recycling televisions and computers is on its way. Households will be able to access free recycling programs later this year. Click on the National Waste Policy link below to find out more.
