Upgrading library technology
We’re upgrading our library borrowing and returns system.
In progress
Works started in April and are expected to be completed across all branches in late 2026.
What we’re doing
We’re upgrading our Radio Frequency ID (RFID) technology to improve accessibility and the experience for people visiting our libraries.
The current technology supports self-service loans and returns. Originally installed in 2016, the technology is approaching the end of its life. The enhanced technology will ensure a more efficient and secure process when borrowing and returning library resources.
Works include:
- upgrading existing equipment including return chutes, return shelves, loans kiosks, security gates and inventory tools across 10 library locations
- changes in layouts to improve access and visitor experience
- building after-hours returns chutes at Customs House and Kings Cross libraries, and improvements to accessibility for returns chutes at Newtown, Surry Hills, Town Hall Express and Waterloo.
All libraries will be open as normal during the upgrade.
