Mitchell Road closure
Following a shoring wall collapse at the Coronation Property site in Erskineville, the northbound lane of Mitchell Road between Maddox and Coulson streets is closed to all traffic..
The southbound lane is closed to vehicles over 4 tonnes, including buses.
- Northbound traffic is being detoured through Sydney Park Road.
- Southbound traffic over 4 tonnes is being detoured through Fountain Street.
Traffic controllers have installed detour signs along the preferred route to provide clear guidance for people driving.
The road has been partially closed for safety reasons while investigations into the collapse continue.
City of Sydney engineers, who inspected the road multiple times after the incident and again this week, believe the collapse has destabilised part of Mitchell Road but investigation works are ongoing.
The road will remain closed until the developer completes repairs to stabilise the street and City of Sydney engineers determine it’s safe to reopen.
There’s currently no timeline for reopening. We understand this is frustrating for the local community due to the impact on traffic but safety remains our highest priority. We ask people to avoid the area while the road is closed.
SafeWork NSW has ordered the developer to stop work and carry out temporary work to stabilise the collapsed shoring. The City of Sydney has issued a stop work order and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collapse, the stability of the road and when it will be safe to reopen.
